By inhabiting different characters, is there something that is really replaced or altered internally every time one channel's a performance? who are we really? and what does our perception of ourselves have to do with it?

In the following pages, you will see one artist's attempt to be different people. The attempt was not just a simple physical transformation, but it was a process of delving deep into each of the characters, their origins, their motivation, their dreams and their fears.

Each character was meticulously planned and fleshed out. This has been a labor of love created over a period of 5 years mainly addressing where we draw our sense of self from.

What began with a simple thought translated into journey that was nothing short of life changing.

FOREWORD

From the time our eyes open, they become the prism through which we experience the world. We do not see the world as it is, we see the world as we are. Everything is filtered through a feeling of self that is present throughout our experience. This intrinsic sense of “I” seems to be absolute and unshakeable. This book is a probe into the question, “If you change the perspective of “I” through which you see the world, does the world change around you?”

There was a desire in me to look at the world through a varied set of eyes, to become different people, distinct characters. Characters we all chance upon everyday; each with a fascinating story of their own.

THE HUSTLER

THE HUSTLER

ASPIRATION

The aspiration for a better life can be born out of two things - The Acceptance of the existing circumstances and the resolve that one’s future will be different than the present.

In the case of Saeed, optimism is the weapon. And that makes him a “hero” within his sphere. Along with being a responsible family man he feels the responsibility to push people to aspire for a better life. All he wants is a life of independence from the cycle of pure survival.

A life of liberation from the pressures
of putting a meal on the table.

THE VAGABOND

THE VAGABOND

ABANDON

In the crowd of people that desire stability and a mundanely structured life, a soul that craves a life of liberty is a deviation.

For such people, building relationships with new surroundings everyday is a necessity. Possessions and repeated experiences have nothing to offer to people like Liam. They live for the thrill of finding themselves in uncharted territory, with nothing but the essentials to live with. Liam is a vagabond who hasn't allowed anything to make him stagnant.

For Liam, it doesn't matter which one it is, he just wants to keep walking and never look back, eyes firmly on the viewfinder. The state of constant motion, unattached to all things , keeps him alive.

THE MISFIT

THE MISFIT

DESPAIR

For most artists, work is born out of a peaceful deliberation.

Some connect with pain and despair strongly to draw inspiration for their work. Some of them are even so deeply ingrained in the pain that the light of hope seems far away. When you lose it, all the light in the world cannot brighten your outlook. Satish is a deeply traditional artist of a rapidly transforming art form. Satish's writing is all heart, but his slow cooker approach to writing is terribly out of place in a world veering towards popcorn content.

Forgotten and unappreciated, he now finds happiness in the smallest of things - a compliment, an unexpected discount, or a good head massage at the local barbershop, moments with his family. Hope is an antidote to the poison of despair and in a city like Mumbai, only hope can keep you moving. And Satish is desperately trying to bridge the gap between despair and hope, one word at a time.

THE GAME CHANGER

THE GAME CHANGER

POWER

The paradox of power is that when one doesn't have it, one dream about it, and when they get it, it comes along with the insecurity of losing.

The wheel of power and status quo is never stable or stationary, and it takes a man like Arnav to break it from the inside out. People like Arnav think they have been given a divine responsibility to change the world, prompting them to devote their life to the cause. There are many paths to helping others but Arnav believes that the path to a better world is in close ties with the government.

He doesn't fear death, only that he will die before he can complete his journey of bringing change in the system. He also fears losing whatever he has created and doesn't want the political clout to get the better of him.

Leadership positions seek out such men, and they never have a dearth of followers. With very little scope for frailty, he lives life on the razor's edge with threats to his life, and always on guard for putting the wrong foot forward.

THE SURVIVOR

THE SURVIVOR

APATHY

Is there a genetic explanation for apathy? For being born as a human and not feel appreciation? Rajneesh’s basic functioning mechanism is of nonacceptance and resistance to change..Indifference comes naturally to people like him.

reaches deep within, till he is detached from what becomes of him. There is nothing to look forward to, to celebrate, to live ecstatically for. What will I leave behind? What will I be remembered for? Are not questions that concern some people. For Rajneesh, just living through the encircling emotions of life is enough of a burden. He trudges through life, not as a gift but with burden. It takes a special kind of sensitivity to be so affected by life that you pretend to not be affected by the cacophony of it.

Rajneesh lives a life that seems OK from the outside, but deep under all those layers of apathy, there is still a possibility of reaching a place where he can accept who he truly is.

THE NON CONFORMIST

THE NON CONFORMIST

REVOLUTION

Revolution is not just the process of change. Dig a little deeper, and you will find an unmoving splinter of pain that can be relieved only when balance is restored. And this is where TanDv is born.

Aarav (Tandv) is a vigilante artist wielding his spray can as a weapon to wake people up and compel them to change.

Aarav’s designs bring to light the wanton consumerism and soulless exploitation of the have-nots by the ones in power. Aarav dabbles in meditation, and has had glimpses of the Intelligent Consciousness. But this insight has failed to heal the part of Aarav that feels rage and disillusionment against his parents and the world’s broken systems.

In all his external rebellion, Aarav has lost touch with a core truth, that the biggest act of revolution is to be centered in your Self. That art is a way to spark revolution, but only when it comes from a place of calm and fullness, and not a bandage for your pain.
